A coalition of Second Amendment activists have scheduled a nationwide “Gun Appreciation Day” on January 19, just two days before the president’s inauguration.
On the scheduled day — a Sunday — firearm enthusiasts are encouraged to visit their local shooting range, attend a gun show or purchase an item at their local gun shop.
According to Bobby Cervantes writing for Politico, “The coalition — including the Second Amendment Foundation, Revolution PAC, Citizens and Country, Conservative Action Alerts, Women Warriors PAC, among others — wants supporters to organize against the president’s ‘post Sandy Hook assault on gun rights.’”
The fact that the event is scheduled so close to the inauguration is not accidental.
“We have never had a president who so callously disregards the Constitution, Congress, the courts and the will of the American people,” Gun Appreciation Day Chairman Larry Ward said.
Politico notes that the Obama administration has been generally pro-Second Amendment during his first term, with legislation he signed into law “including allowing loaded firearms in national parks and on Amtrak passengers’ checked baggage.”
Given public sentiment after Sandy Hook, Obama did an about face and has asked Vice President Joe Biden to chair and fast-track a task force to consider new gun control legislation.
In addition, 10 gun control bills were submitted in the House last week, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein is expected to introduce a new ban on assault weapons, high capacity magazines, and establish a national gun registry.
