Norquist: Obama wants to count leaving Iraq as budget cut

Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, appeared on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” to discuss his “no-new-tax-pledge” many lawmakers have taken amid the “fiscal cliff” talks.

Norquist has been the center of the “blame game” in washington because of that pledge, with Democrats claiming it’s been a monkey wrench to any resolution. Norquist emphasized that House Speaker John Boehner’s “Plan-B” didn’t technically violate the pledge because it dealt with tax increases that were already scheduled to occur automatically in 2013.

“Closing Bell” host Bill Griffeth asked, “Aren’t we at a point now, economically, where there has to be some mechanism of revenue-raising to try and solve the debt crisis

“If you put tax increases on the table, you never get spending restraints. All Obama has done for the last four years is clamor for higher taxes to spend more money,” he said. “The only time we’ve beat him back on spending at all was during the debt-ceiling crisis.”

Norquist then pointed out the disingenuous nature of the few “spending cuts” the president has offered, in that Obama is “willing to save $1 trillion by not occupying Iraq for the next decade. He wanted to count that like not continuing the War of 1812 was his budget cut.”
