NRA president says don’t prosecute David Gregory for ‘silly felony’

The NRA’s president David Keene appeared on CNN’s “Newsroom” to weigh in on discussion surrounding the investigation of journalist David Gregory, who waved around a 30-round gun magazine on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” to prove a point about gun legislation.

Keene offered his opinion right out of the box; “There are two lessons for him there. One, don’t ask the government what’s legal and what isn’t legal because half the people don’t know. And secondly, that’s a silly felony. It’s a felony in Washington, D.C. to own that magazine or to be caught with a cartridge.”

He continued with, “So, I really think what David Gregory did while he was inadvertently flouting the law was illustrate in a very graphic way, perhaps not intentionally but in a graphic way, just how silly some of these laws are.”

The show’s host Carol Costello questioned Keene’s position on Gregory and said, “isn’t it the NRA’s position to enforce laws that are on the books . . . then why not enforce this one, it’s on the books?”

“I’m not a vindictive guy that wants to go after David Gregory,” Keene told Costello. “And I don’t think most people do. I do believe it illustrates the craziness of some of these laws”

Costello, not backing down repeated, “but still, it’s a law that is on the books and that’s your position, so right now it’s illegal to hold up something like that . . . “

“Our position is that people who use guns and firearms in the commission of crimes should be prosecuted under existing laws. This was not a commission of a separate crime by David Gregory,” said Keene.

“The fact of the matter is, if you want to support indicting David Gregory, fine,” he added in the end.
