Sen. Joe Manchin, D-WV, is asking MTV to can their new reality television show “Buckwild”, which critics say looks to make a profit from offensive stereotypes.
An excerpt from a letter Manchin fired off to MTV reads:
“As a proud West Virginian, I am writing to formally request that you put a stop the travesty called Buckwild. Instead of showcasing the beauty of our state, you preyed on young people, coaxed them into shameful behavior, and now you are profiting from it. That is just wrong. This show plays to ugly, inaccurate stereotypes about the people of West Virginia.”
“This is one of the greatest states in the nation with the best people, it’s not who we are not how we were raised,” said Manchin speaking to NBC’s Matt Lauer on the Today Show. “It’s wrong.”
Lauer asked Manchin if his protests are actually giving the show more publicity and drawing more attention to its upcoming premier.
Manchin said that he would like to see the program show a balance, feature some of the positive aspects of the youth in West Virginia.
Since reality television is meant to do just the opposite, Lauer said that Manchin is “looking to the wrong place for inspiration.”
