During his show Thursday, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews accused the GOP of using “dog whistles” to signal racism in a discussion with former Congressman J.C. Watts.
Matthews played a montage of clips that included Donald Trump, Newt Gingrich and Jon Sununu to illustrate what he said was their way of saying “we don’t like black presidents.”
Responding the Trump clip, Watts said, “On the birther thing, I think that’s a losing issue. I can’t speak for the Republican party.”
It has been speculated recently that Watts may have an interest in the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee. “You’re going to have to speak for these clowns,” Matthews challenged.
Watts said “there has to be a different tone” and that it is “unfair to paint with a broad brush,” but was interrupted before he could finish his sentence.
“Do you agree that these are dog whistles,” Matthews asked pointedly. “These are signals to people; we don’t like black presidents?”
“I was critical of the Romney folks – they had no diversity in their campaign,” Watts replied.
