In what could be a sign of the times under a fiscal crunch, the bankrupt city of San Bernadino, Calif. has slashed public safety budgets and downsized the police force. As a result, Jim Penman, the city attorney of San Berdino, told residents to “lock your doors and load your guns” because they will have to start protecting themselves.
“You should say what you mean and mean what you say,” Penman said after being criticized for being “brutally honest.”
The city has already cut its police force by about 80 officers and residents are critical of the police department’s response time.
“I’m not advocating that people go out, who don’t have any training, and buy firearms. I certainly strongly caution anyone who has children at home not to have a loaded gun in the house,” Penman said.
“San Bernardino has seen a 50 percent increase in murders this year comported to 2011,” CBS Los Angeles reports.
