Heading off a fiscal cliff? You think?!
While not surprising, it’s infuriating to see the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services promoting government benefits (read: welfare) to new immigrants.
WelcometoUSA.gov has a “Government Benefits” tab at the top of its website, and along with links to “all available federal benefit programs,” “Medicare,” “Medicaid” and “Food Stamps,” it says:
Depending on your immigration status, length of time in the United States, and income, you may be eligible for some federal benefit programs. Government assistance programs can be critically important to the well-being of some immigrants and their families. Frequently, however, there is a lack of information about how to access such benefits. Benefit programs can be complicated and you may be given misleading information about how they operate.
So the government goes right ahead and spoon-feeds all the information immigrants need to become dependent on financial assistance in their new country. Incredible. The Daily Caller reported how the website goes on to promote, among other things, “free public education” for children (hang on while I take a peek at my last tax bill). The article has this to say on a section from the guidebook for new immigrants:
Most hospitals are required by federal law to treat patients with a medical emergency even if the person cannot pay,” the guide tips. It goes on to advise that while “[y]ou or members of your family may be eligible for other federal benefits” it depends on “your immigration status, length of time in the U.S., and income.
Well, let’s not get hung up here. Obamacare will change everything.
Fortunately, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., the ranking member on the Senate Budget Committee, is all over Homeland Security and its attempt to make new immigrants dependent on welfare.
“It is a long-held principle of immigration that those seeking a life in America are expected to be able to care for themselves financially and contribute to the financial health of the nation,” Sessions said in a press release. “The Administration’s actions show this principle is no longer in effect. … DHS should remove any sections of its website, and any portions of its materials for new arrivals, that promote or encourage welfare reliance.”
Amen. And while at it, how about DHS promote “no such thing as a free lunch,” or “nothing in life is free”?
