Petitioners from 20 states including Florida are testing the oft-repeated Lincoln quote, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Unlike the Civil War, however, it has nothing to do with slavery or geography, but rather politics.

The avalanche of petitions began with Louisiana on Nov. 7, the day after the presidential election. This was followed in short order by Texas. Since then an additional 18 states have joined in, and not all of them are from the south.

According to The Daily Caller:

If 25,000 people sign the petition by Dec. 7, it will “require a response” from the Obama administration, according to published rules of the White House’s online “We the People” program.

The Louisiana petition has collected more than 12,300 signatures in four days. A separate effort from Texas has 15,400 supporters.

States that followed Louisiana and Texas with with secession-related petitions on the White House website now include Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina and Tennessee.
