Texas Young Republicans cover polls in PBC, local GOP AWOL

When Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher decided to extend early voting on her own by allowing residents to cast absentee ballots at her office, the local GOP was nowhere to be found. But Young Republicans from Texas helped saved the day.

Bucher, well-known as a savagely partisan Democrat in her days as a state representative, only told the liberal Palm Beach Post — a publication few Republicans read — that she would allow in-person absentee voting starting Sunday morning.

I’m not going to sugarcoat this because it doesn’t deserve sugarcoating: The local Republican Party basically took the day off. Paid staffers weren’t working, and most of the party officers and board members went to see Rudy Giuliani speak, then went home.

I know, it’s Sunday, and I don’t usually work Sundays, either. But since it’s less than 48 hours before the most important election of my lifetime, I kind of assumed someone from the party might be working.

Silly me.

No matter. The campaigns of Republicans Allen West, Adam Hasner, Ellyn Bogdanoff, Pat Rooney, Tami Donnally and Bill Hager rushed volunteers and staff to cover the long and unexpected line of early voters.

There was also this charming and exuberant young woman there from Texas for the Romney campaign.

If you ever wondered why Texas is such reliably red state, wonder no more.
