U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., appeared on C-SPAN last Sunday and disclosed that last May, our State Department denied the security team for the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi the continued use of a DC-3 airplane. Three days later the State Department approved a $100,000 expenditure at our embassy in Vienna, Austria to install charging stations for electric vehicles.
“What I’ve been pounding home is four days after that DC-3 was removed in May of 2012, they approved $100,000 to ‘green up’ the embassy in Vienna, to spend some money on electrical charging stations for electric cars that cost the taxpayer $250,000 per car in subsidies,” said Paul.
On the morning after the Sept. 11 attack, it took a small chartered plane two round trips to evacuate the consulate and security personnel from Benghazi. The DC-3 could have made it in one. The DC-3 would also have provided another option in the days before the attack that was not otherwise available.
After our Vienna foreign mission received the funds, it touted that it was now “Celebrating the greening of the embassy” on its website.
Paul began his inquiry with “the primary question …. Why did they remove the 16-person security team in August that had specifically requested to stay?”
