It’s pretty much common knowledge that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a huge fan of gun control. No one knew just how big a fan he was until Superstorm Sandy left her calling card after her dramatic Monday night appearance.
Surveying the damage and concerned about looting, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz requested elements of the National Guard, particularly in the hard-hit seaside resort area in and around Coney Island.
Bloomberg put his foot down. “We don’t need it,” he said at a Wednesday press conference.
Then he made the reason for his refusal clear. “The NYPD is the only people we want on the street with guns.” Hizzonor doesn’t trust the National Guard?
Markowitz continued making his case to Bloomberg:
All of our resources have been stretched to the limit. In the name of public safety we need to send more National Guard personnel into Coney Island, Manhattan Beach, Gerritsen Beach, Red Hook, and any other locations.
Citing fears of becoming a “police state,” the mayor wouldn’t budge. “There are plenty of locations upstate and in surrounding states where they don’t have a police department the size of New York and they can use help [from the National Guard].”
Last Friday we reported that utility crews from Alabama showed up in New Jersey to help restore power and were turned away because they lacked a union card. Now New York doesn’t want the services of the National Guard because they have guns? Is there something in the water up there we should know about?
