TV reporter finally puts Obama in hot seat

President Barack Obama submitted to two interviews on Friday, one via satellite with reporter Kyle Clark on KUSA 9NEWS, an NBC affiliate in Denver; the other with MTV’s Sway Calloway. The two conversations couldn’t have been more different.

Kyle Clark Barack ObamaClark led his interview with “the question of the day” — whether Americans were denied requests for assistance when they came under attack in Libya. He ended the question by asking, “Is it fair to say we’ll find out [what happened] after the election?”

When the president talked around the question of whether the Benghazi foreign mission was denied the help they requested, Clark asked again and again the president didn’t answer.

Getting nowhere on Benghazi, Clark then tackled the issue of Abound Solar, which he described as “a Colorado company connected to one of [Obama’s] billionaire fundraisers,” now bankrupt and under criminal investigation.

Clark continued, “How do you answer your critics who see Abound Solar as Colorado’s Solyndra, a politically connected company who took our money with it?” Clark asked.

It was another uncomfortable question, prompting a three-minute monologue by Obama on how green energy supposedly creates job opportunities.

If Obama thought it couldn’t possibility get any worse, he was mistaken.

“Mr. President, you call for more civility,” Clark began. “In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, you called Mitt Romney a ‘bullsh***er.’ What did you mean, and why did you choose that word?”

Here again, Obama chose to ignore the question and segued into keeping his promises of ending the Iraq war and getting Osama bin Laden. What about that promise of a transparent administration?

Sway Calloway Barack ObamaYou could almost hear a sigh of relief when, later in the day, the president sat down for a live, softball interview with MTV’s Calloway, answering questions submitted via Facebook and live through a video feed with Georgetown University students.

This time, the president was on more comfortable ground. The topics included global warming, Facebook and his iPod playlist. We learned from this gripping conversation that he likes to “think of myself as a man.” Riveting. Spellbinding. Stop the presses.

These interviews come at a time when the president hasn’t made a scheduled appeared before the White House press corps since June 15 — over four months ago. To be fair, the president did make a brief, unscheduled appearance on August 20, but he only stuck around long enough to answered but a few questions.

Especially troubling is the fact that he hasn’t held a press conference since the Sept. 15 raid on Benghazi. Until he does, we at least have a reporter from a local Denver TV station who knows how to ask the hard questions.

Here’s that interview.
