Allen West opponent acting like ignorant child

On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Allen West’s Democratic opponent, Patrick Murphy, sent an email to his supporters complaining about a West campaign mailer.

“Allen West has sent a mailer that is hands-down his most shameless attack yet,” the email said. “He has a picture of a burning U.S. flag and claims I have ties to terrorists!”

First of all, West didn’t send out the mailer — the Republican Party of Florida did. I’m sure Murphy knows about others speaking on one’s behalf. A Murphy super PAC ran a despicably racist TV spot depicting a cartoon image of West sporting a gold tooth, punching out elderly white women and stealing from black families. Using Murphy’s words, that ad was hands down his most shameless attack yet. Murphy claimed innocence, saying it was all the PAC’s fault — a PAC largely funded by Murphy’s father.

Murphy’s second complaint is that the mailer itself features a photo of a burning flag.

Murphy made his ignorance of world events crystal clear early this month during a forum appearance. When Murphy asserted that the United States is spending billions of dollars per week maintaining our presence in Iraq, West had to inform him that we’re out of Iraq.

The same applies here. Although Democrats don’t like to be reminded of the fact, the Obama administration’s foreign policy of appeasement has been a dismal failure. There’s nothing that represents that failure with more certainty than the burning of our flags at our foreign missions on Sept. 11.

Murphy next cries that the mailer claims he “has ties to terrorists.”

The mailer makes no claim of any direct ties to terrorists. It makes reference to the fact that Murphy is a J Street PAC-endorsed candidate. There’s no question that J Street has ties to Hamas and is funded by George Soros, as the mailer claims.

The mailer also claims that a “Murphy donor has close ties to alleged terrorist activity,” and made it clear that the donation was made to the Murphy super PAC. Every claim in the mailer is documented and footnoted.

The point is, if you’re going to lie down with dogs, expect to get fleas, and Murphy is riddled with them. Campaign funds and endorsements carry with them the responsibility to look beyond the support and the money. Murphy didn’t meet that responsibility. He just took the cash and ran.

Rather than crying about a well-documented mailer made on behalf of his opponent, Murphy’s time might be better spent boning up on the issues — especially world events.
