Inappropriate links removed from county Supervisor of Elections website

Broward County’s Republican Party chairman was ultimately successful in getting what he called all “inappropriate links” removed from the county Supervisor of Elections website last week.

Earlier this month, BizPac Review reported that the League of Women Voters’ voting guide had been removed from its prominent location on the Broward elections supervisor home page after calls and emails were made by county GOP Chairman Richard DeNapoli and some concerned committee members.

The guide was removed, but the League of Women Voters link was still available in the site’s “Voter Education” section, along with links to the NAACP, School Board, Vote Smart and Rock the Vote.

While DeNapoli was pleased with the guide’s removal, he was curious as to why the other links remained on a nonpartisan government website when many of the organizations represented in the links have a political agenda.

Although elections spokeswoman Mary Cooney said she assumed the links were provided for a valid reason, she was unable to articulate one.

After the story broke, Broward Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes returned Biz Pac Review’s call to say the links had been on the site for a long time, but now that it had been brought to her office’s attention, the issue would be readdressed.

“We don’t want to give the impression that we are bunched with just one group,” Snipes said. “We really are a nonpartisan organization.”

The links were removed immediately after that phone call.
