Paul Ryan’s appointment as Mitt Romney’s running mate is like a beautiful woman — It’s filled with excitement and fraught with danger.
It’s no news that presumed GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney chose 7-term U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) as his running mate. Romney’s decision was both bold and brilliant. I love Ryan’s understanding of economics, as well as his calm, deliberative explanations of fiscal and budgetary issues.
I’m not alone in my admiration. Since his appointment as Budget Committee Chairman, he’s become something of a figurehead for responsible spending cuts and fiscal conservatism. His budget proposals, which routinely pass in the House but languish in the Senate, are in stark contrast to the president’s “Thelma and Louise” plan to keep the pedal to the metal until we run the car off the cliff.
Because of this, he’ll charge the Republican base as no other appointee could. As U.S. Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) posted on his Facebook page, “Paul Ryan is the intellectual epicenter of the Republican Party. The Romney-Ryan ticket has my wholehearted support.” West expanded on this theme in a press release: “He has consistently provided realistic, actionable solutions that will keep our promises to our seniors while putting our economy back on the ‘Road to Prosperity.’”
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) also hailed Romney’s choice for a running mate, saying, “The Romney-Ryan ticket is going to win in November because it offers the American people visionary leadership to recapture the free enterprise spirit that has empowered countless Americans to build businesses from scratch and live the American dream.”
But as much as Ryan will excite the GOP base, he’ll also energize the Democrats. Ryan’s proposal to convert Medicare into a voucher system over time rewarded him with a video depicting him of throwing Granny off the cliff. What a voucher system would accomplish would be to take the federal government out of the health insurance business and turn it back over to the commercial carriers — those who actually know what they’re doing.
I’m sure that Ryan’s critics will also point to the fact that he’s a House member and not a senator. As such, he has almost no foreign affair experience. However, just as Allen West described Ryan as “the intellectual epicenter of the Republican Party,” I’m sure he’d agree that Ryan has always been a quick study. I have no reason to doubt that he will wipe the floor with Joe Biden at the vice-presidential debate.
Again, the Romney-Ryan ticket is both bold and brilliant, and like the captivating woman described above, the beauty overshadows the danger. It’s going to be a fun campaign season.
