Nelson vs Mack, let the ad wars begin

‘Tis the season when candidates release new political ads almost daily, and U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla,, is no exception. In response, Miami Herald’s Marc Caputo asks, “Why is Sen. Bill Nelson reminding us of who he is?” He continues:

The ad, well produced and hitting all the centrist notes he likes to stress, is almost on par with an introductory ad from a political unknown, which is odd considering he has held office on and off for about, well, 40 years.

But there’s a reason Nelson needs to remind people of who he is and what he has done: He has been shredded by about $7 million worth of negative ads from conservative third-party groups that want Republican Rep. Connie Mack to win and help put the Senate back in GOP hands. Nelson clings to a slim lead in the polls. The race is a toss-up right now. If it wasn’t, Nelson would be saving his money.

As Caputo reported in an earlier post: “Nelson is essentially running neck-and-neck with Republican Connie Mack, who’s being outraised by the incumbent but has the help of Super PAC third-party groups. They’s already spent an estimated $7 million to knock the Democrat down a few pegs.”

Another reason that Nelson has to remind us who he is is because he spends way too much time in Washington and not enough time with regular folks — like his constituents. If he had, he would never have voted for the Affordable Care Act, which stripped $500 billion away from Medicare and will more than likely put an end to the popular Medicare Advantage program.
