Patrick Murphy replaces freedom with slavery

Patrick Murphy, just like every other progressive, is turning America into a nation of slaves, and he doesn’t even realize it.

On July 11, Murphy, the Democratic candidate for Florida’s Congressional District 18, sent an email to his supporters admonishing U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Palm Beach Gardens, his opponent in November’s general election. Murphy took issue with this statement West made on FOX News concerning Social Security disability: “We’re creating this sense of economic dependence, which, to me, is a form of modern, 21st-century slavery.”

Murphy’s entitlement-centered mindset prevents him from fully understanding freedom and equality’s true nature. And until he does, he can neither appreciate the basis for our national exceptionalism, nor realize why that greatness is now slipping from our grasp.

Perhaps the most beautifully powerful words in the English language are those in the second sentence of the Declaration of Independence:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Note that this assertion affirms our creator made each of us equal to one another from the moment of our birth. Our opportunity for success is limited only by personal ambition and imagination. Class distinctions don’t enter into the mix to hold us back. Cleon Skousen’s book, “The 5,000 Year Leap,” concluded that our country’s founding principles resulted in more progress during the first 200 years of our nation than had been achieved during the previous 5,000 years of world history. And he makes a compelling case.

West understands this concept — his entire life has been its very embodiment. Patrick Murphy does not. Like most progressives, he insists upon tinkering with perfection, fixing what isn’t broken and tweaking a formula that has been wildly successful for 200 years. He wants to replace equal opportunity with equal results. And in making that trade, he also replaces freedom with slavery.

Those receiving public assistance become slaves to a system that allows them to enjoy a life of relative ease without having earned it. As a result, they’ll always be stuck at a comfortable poverty level. Their drive and ambition has been robbed, and they’ll never know the sense of self-worth that labor provides.

Wage earners also become slaves in an entitlement society. They’re slaves to both the government and the entitled class. Tax Freedom Day comes when we have earned enough money to pay off our tax bill for the year. In 2012, it arrived on April 17, four days later than the previous year. If progressives like Murphy have their way, it’ll only get worse.

I’m not so much upset that Murphy supports a welfare state as I am saddened that he doesn’t recognize its necessary end result. Neither West nor any other conservative would deny anyone a safety net during times of genuine need. But when the net becomes a way of life, it enslaves society, robbing it of incentive, and by extension, stunting progress and development.
