If Democrats thought they were facing a walk in the park in the upcoming battle over Florida Senate District 34, they greatly underestimated the bipartisan appeal of state Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale.
The newly drawn district has a nine-point Democratic edge in registration, but as a Viagra ad might say, “It’s all in the performance.”
The district runs from Harbor Isles in Fort Lauderdale to the city of Boynton Beach and hugs mostly coastal areas until it reaches Palm Beach County, where it jogs west and takes in Democratic strongholds like Kings Point.
A poll taken in March shows Bogdanoff beating District 34 rival Sen. Maria Sachs, D-Boca Raton, by 7 percent in a head-to-head matchup.
The poll sampled 300 most likely general election voters and found that if the election were held today, Bogdanoff would get 34 percent of the votes to Sachs’ 27 percent, with 39 percent undecided. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percent.
Both Bogdanoff and Sachs are popular figures in south Palm Beach County, and the race promises to be one of the most competitive and expensive battles in the state.
The Democrats see the race as an opportunity for a “pickup,” but Bogdanoff is popular with independents and has long had broad bipartisan appeal going back to her days as a Broward County child advocate in the 1990s. Known as a policy wonk and a tireless campaigner, Bogdanoff, as the most current data illustrates, will be tough to beat.
