Philanthropist Yvonne Boice made one thing clear when she introduced U.S. Senate candidate George LeMieux at a Tuesday fundraiser: She believes he’s the best man to unseat Democrat Bill Nelson. LeMieux is a former Florida Attorney General, a former U.S. Senator, and has served as Chief of Staff to Governor Charlie Christ.
In a room full of guests invited by the Boca Raton businesswoman and a host committee that included state Rep. George Moraitis and Boca Raton Vice Mayor Susan Haynie, LeMieux gave a sobering speech on the country’s economy and its debt and deficit woes, telling the attentive audience that the U.S. Senate race is even more important than who will occupy the White House in 2012.
“Whether or not we are going to . . . balance the budget, get rid of Obamacare, get rid of Dodd/Frank, strip away regulations, fund NASA again or have the strongest military in the world will depend on us controlling the House and the Senate,” he said. “Right now, what you’re seeing is that the House is under Republicans’ control. They are passing good bills, and they are going over to the Senate, where they are dying on the doorsteps. We are not going to save America as long as Harry Reid is running the U.S. Senate.”
The event, held at Bash at Boca, raised thousands of dollars for the LeMieux campaign, despite Boice’s years-long support for one of LeMieux’s opponents, Adam Hasner.
“He knows the issues, because he’s been there,” Boice said of her candidate of choice. “It’s not that I don’t like Adam. . . I love Adam. Adam and Jillian are dear friends of mine, but I don’t think Adam can win, where George can.”
“It’s about education,” she added. “He’s a walking encyclopedia.”
LeMieux also acknowledged Boice’s decision to support him over Hasner, saying, “It takes courage to support someone when you don’t support the hometown guy. I will never forget it.”
