The Associated Industries of Florida is holding its annual conference this week at the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, where members will attend discussions about the latest political trends and important business issues facing Florida. Among the topics on the agenda: briefings on redistricting, Florida’s new regulatory climate, and a keynote speech by Lt .Gov. Jennifer Carroll.
From its headquarters in Tallahassee, this influential group of businesses keeps tabs on legislation being presented to Florida’s elected officials and executive agencies. Its purpose is to affect public policies that foster growth and stability among the private sector. Members voluntarily give their time, talent and money to secure economic success for the state and to seek solutions to the burdens facing employers. They often work with legislators to make sure the principles of free enterprise get a fair hearing.
Known as “the voice of Florida business,” the association strives to take on projects that will move the state toward sound economic policy. It has been representing private business interests since 1920.
In advance of the conference, AIF on Thursday held its Third Annual Champions for Business Award Ceremony, where members of the Florida House and Senate were honored for bills they championed throughout the year. Among the 24 award recipients were South Florida-based Sens. Ellyn Bogdanoff, Joe Negron and Anitere Flores.
One of the “Legislator of the Year” honors went to state Rep. Joe Abruzzo for his work on HB 215, which affected emergency management and was signed into law on May 26. The bill is entitled the “Post Disaster Relief Assistance Act”.
Other officials in attendance included state Reps. Lori Berman, Pat Rooney and Mack Bernard, as well as Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, who liberally praised the state Legislature’s work this year.
“This group of legislators was the boldest and most courageous defenders of our constitutional principles and champions of the entrepreneurial spirit,” Atwater told BizPacReview.com. “They have advanced us greatly down the path of prosperity.”
