President Obama disengaged, again

Let’s begin with a brief quiz.

It’s the middle of the night and you awaken to the sound of your dog barking. You open your eyes and notice smoke drifting in beneath your door. The room is noticeably warm, and you can make out a faint, flickering, orange glow through the smoky haze. Your house is on fire. What’s your first response?

Should you (a), go online to take advantage of that terrific offer you received for a “his and her” burial plot; or (b), get everyone safely out of the house and phone the fire department?

Call me psychic, but I’m betting everyone chose (b). If you did, you have my congratulations. You’re smarter than the president of the United States.

During the last ten days, our country was in the midst of an debt ceiling impasse, a still-possible credit downgrade and a plummeting stock market. The nation was so strapped that Apple Computer Company had more cash in its reserves than the United States has in its Treasury. These are the moments in history when true leaders emerge — leaders like Washington, Lincoln and Churchill.

President Obama, however, was so disengaged that instead of taking the lead in the debate to resolve our nation’s ills, he announced new CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards for the year2025. What? The country was going down in flames, and he focused attention on gas mileage? For 2025!

When he finally got around to the nation’s most pressing issue, instead of presenting his solution to the American people, he initiated a  “Twitter battle,”  which accomplished little more than to cause over 40,000 people to stop following him. Doesn’t a “Twitter battle” strike you as being a bit, well, juvenile?

This isn’t the first time this has happened. Remember the fall of 2009, when he, Michelle and Oprah Winfrey jetted off to make their failed pitch for the 2016 Summer Olympics to be held in Chicago? While he was busy exhorting the virtues of the Windy City to the International Olympic Committee, Gen. Stanley McChrystal was cooling his heels regarding his request for an Afghanistan troop surge. We’ve all seen images of Obama working on his golf game during times of crisis. When Japan was wiped out by a tsunami and faced the possibility of a nuclear meltdown, he was heading off to the links. If there are floods in the Missouri River valley, he’ll be teeing off on the 13th. While tornadoes ravage Texas, he’s putting on the No. 5 green.

I’d give his leisure time a bit more latitude if he had actually accomplished something. Instead, he has shown himself to be a “counterfeit president” whose duties are at odds with his beliefs.

Although unemployment has soared, he seems hell-bent on taxing and regulating business, the job creator, out of existence. He’s a head of state, yet the mechanics of governing appear beneath him. His arrogant incompetence, coupled with his muddled foreign policy, has sent respect from other world leaders into free fall.

I have but one final question: Given Barack Obama’s misplaced priorities, is he a viable world leader? The answer is, “No, but he plays one on TV.”
