Orlando resident Don Madden recently responded to a Washington Post Op-Ed by Harold Meyerson, who indirectly suggests that right-wing talk show commentators incite violence against the government.

The article, titled ‘Dangerous outcomes from a culture of paranoia’, which tells you what direction Meyerson is going, attempts to paint the right as being overrun by fringe elements consumed with paranoia.  The article can be read HERE.

Whereas, it’s not often that a comment to an article overtakes the article itself, this is one of those rare times where that’s exactly what takes place.  Madden is bold and fresh, getting straight to the point and in the process manages to capture the entire crux of what the real issue is between the right and the left in this country.  Enjoy –

Dear Mr. Meyerson,

The problem with your thesis is that you ignore the stated intention of the left to completely change America.

Given that and the events of the past two years (the backroom deals; the “you’ll know what’s in the bill when we pass it…” end run on open government; the government takeovers of General Motors and the entire student loan industry etc. etc. etc.) distrust of our government is perfectly rational.

We look at the Pelosi/Reed congress and ask: who are these people, and why do they persist doing things with which (think healthcare) most Americans vehemently disagree? What part of the Pelosi/Reid congress was faithful to the social contract (it is called the Constitution) the American people insisted on having with their government before acquiescing to being governed?

The Founding Fathers – and conservatives today – view the Constitution as a method of controlling the very excesses of government that are playing out in America today.

I accept that you disagree. But if you had any sense of honor, or a pair of balls, you would insist on a referendum to change or abandon the Constitution, rather than weaseling around the edges with gimmickry like the hyperinflation of the Commerce Clause.

From the right I agree there are dangerous consequences that will come from this cowardice of the left. But the fault lies with you and your fellow travelers for the disingenuous manner in which you choose to change the country into something it has never been.

If you ideas can stand the light of day, propose the constitutional changes you desire and let the matter play out in a democratic process. But just because you believe in your enlightened heart that your path is the best for America doesn’t make it so. I believe in a limited government just like the signers of the Constitution envisioned, a government that would never dream of intruding into decisions of what kind of light bulbs I should use in my own home.  

Perhaps this would be a good time for the left to stop the name calling, grow up and have a serious conversation about the future of our country. Put your ideas to the test of a referendum to change or abandon our constitution, and then live with the consequences.

You’re not paranoid about entrusting your ideas to the American people, are you?
