An Aggressive Agenda For A Newly Remade House

sandyadamsNewly elected Congresswoman Sandy Adams penned an editorial for the Daytona Beach News-Journal.  In short, her message is inspirational.  If all elected officials conveyed this sentiment, perhaps our world would be a better place.

Of course, the challenge for Rep.-elect Adams is to live up to her inspiring words.  No easy task once you start drinking the water in Washington, D.C.!

Those who make up the tea party are often accused of being naive and unrealistic, but a recent Rasmussen poll shows that 70% have faith in those who were just elected, at least for now…Ms. Adams, we believe!

An Aggressive Agenda For A Newly Remade House

Rep.-elect Sandy Adams (FL-24)

Central Florida is home to some of the biggest tourist attractions found anywhere. Daytona’s beaches. Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios. And Daytona International Speedway. These destination spots all have a rich history and deserve to be listed in “must-see” guidebooks.

But, what is it about these locations that are truly important? What is it that drives people from every corner of America to visit each year? I believe that it is the hard work of the men and women that help these places operate every day that allows us to thrill millions each year. It is the entrepreneur who built, not just a racetrack, but a motorsports industry. The artist who knew that a mouse and a duck would thrill children everywhere. And the engineers who dared to dream that we could one day reach the stars.

On Nov. 2, I was elected to represent all of these visionaries, and the men and women who make their dreams a reality, as the representative for Florida’s 24th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. This is a two-year term, where I will have the great honor and responsibility of representing your views in Congress. This is not a task I take lightly.

The examples above of individuals who had the freedom to create and invest are some of the reasons why I ran for Congress, and what I view as my agenda for the next two years. Whether it is a housing market with too many foreclosures and not enough construction, or a tourism industry hampered by not enough families able to make the trip down to Florida’s beaches and theme parks, our economy needs help.

I am looking forward to taking the oath of office on Jan. 5. Now is the time for incoming members of the 112th Congress to make a difference for the people we were chosen to represent. If we act selfishly or unethically, we will have failed our constituents and let them down. If we act with honor and conviction and in a transparent manner, we can restore credibility to Congress that has been lacking for the better part of a decade.

My goals and vision for the next year are simple. To perform the best customer service I can, while upholding the highest ethical standards possible. If I can meet that mission statement in everything that I do, I know that I will have done my best to serve the men and women of Florida’s 24th District.

Some of the specific tasks that I would like to accomplish during my time in Congress are those that the voters tasked me with during the campaign. Namely, repealing and replacing the government takeover of health care, helping the private sector create jobs and grow the economy, stopping the reckless spending on bailouts and stimulus spending bills, and ending the culture of corruption that seems to take over in Washington, D.C.

I also believe that it is important to be an advocate for the needs of the district. That means that I will work to educate my colleagues about the importance of restoring human space flight as the mission of NASA — not as an afterthought or something that would be “nice” to do, but as the core mission of the agency. It’s not just a national security issue for me, but also a jobs issue, as thousands of our friends and neighbors have helped to make the United States pre-eminent in space exploration and human space flight. We cannot and should not be forced to rely on the Russians and Chinese to get our astronauts into space.

In the coming months, it is also my plan to conduct town hall meetings throughout each of the four counties of the 24th District. The input of my constituents is vital to me. I will be doing my best to listen to them throughout my time in Congress. I look forward to meeting you at one of the town hall meetings, and I hope you bring your best ideas with you, so that together we can find ways to improve the lives of our friends and neighbors.

2011 is going to be an exciting year for Florida. Working together we have the chance to make a difference, finding ways to create jobs in the private sector and strengthen our economy. My pledge to you is that I will do everything in my power to be a true public servant — focusing on customer service and high ethical standards. Because representative isn’t a title to me, it’s a job description.
