MACK OPPOSES GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER OF INTERNET
Decries new net neutrality rules approved by FCC
WASHINGTON – Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14) decried the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) approval of new network neutrality rules today that amount to a federal government takeover of the Internet.
Mack said:
“Today, the Federal Communications Commission approved new rules that are nothing less than a federal government takeover of the Internet. By approving Chairman Genachowski’s proposal, the FCC is defying the will of Congress and ignoring a recent ruling by a federal appeals court. Today’s action will not survive a court challenge and I am hopeful Congress will reverse these newly-adopted FCC rules next year.
“The broadband marketplace has thrived thanks to competition and the hands-off approach that had been previously adopted by the federal government. When the government picks winners and losers in the market, innovation and investment are stifled. Chairman Genachowski’s actions today will slow further investment in high-speed broadband networks and may further harm our economic recovery. I am deeply disappointed by this unnecessary and unauthorized government takeover of the Internet.”
By a 3-2 vote, the FCC approved new rules giving the Commission the power to regulate the Internet. Voting in favor of the proposal were Democratic Chairman Julius Genachowski and Democratic Commissioners Mignon Clyburn and Michael J. Copps. Republican Commissioners Robert M. McDowell and Meredith Attwell Baker opposed the new rules.
