West Orlando Tea Party
When I am out and the opportunity arises, I still talk often about the tea party movement and what we are doing.
For many people, they still have this misperception of the “extreme” views of the tea party that has been portrayed by the media. Others wonder what we are going to do now and how we will effect change in the coming years. One thing that’s sure is that there is still a lot of work to be done and enormous potential for the tea party movement to grow.
As most Americans begin to look ahead to the new year, many leaders in the tea party movement are also thinking about the coming year and how the tea party can continue to be effective. One major goal for the movement will be to continue educating people and to get our message across to more Americans. Once people hear the truth, they get what we are all about and many join our cause.
The problem has been the misunderstanding by many due to the attacks from the left and the image portrayed by some media outlets. I guess when you are a grass-roots organization, you don’t have access to the best branding minds in the world. Without money to spend on ads, you take what you can get and hope all goes well. I believe we have done okay, but can still do a better job at branding the tea party and what we stand for.
There is one thing that the movement does have and that is voices. We have lots of voices and our numbers are growing every day. I believe our founders would be proud to see how we have taken their vision and principles for America and used them here in the 21st century with the technology we have.
I guess we should thank Al Gore for his wonderful discovery, the Internet, which allows us all to communicate our message to millions. The Internet has allowed us to communicate in ways that did not exist 20 years ago and is a major reason why the tea party has grown so fast.
Another question I get asked is; “What are you guys doing now and how are you going to hold politicians accountable?” My first thought is that Alan Grayson’s moving truck hasn’t even arrived in D.C. yet so why are you asking me that question.
On a serious note, there have been things going on, but for many of us, we are simply recharging the batteries and getting ready for 2011-12.
Others in the tea party movement are in contact with elected leaders and still actively involved. Recently the Central Florida Tea Party Council was formed to help communicate with those in the movement and strengthen the voices we have. The idea is to grow the tea parties in Central Florida and to harness the power of all the local parties into one unified voice, and when needed, to let elected officials know where we stand.
The work of the tea party is ongoing and we will not be going away any time soon. We will continue to hold politicians accountable and we will support them, when appropriate, in their efforts to restore America. I continue to be amazed and what the tea party movement has accomplished in such a short time and the response from our elected officials. It’s nice to see that they are listening and I hope they realize what is at stake for this great country.
The West Orlando Tea Party is having our first annual Christmas Party this Tuesday at the West Orange Country Club at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend as we reflect on a great effort by the tea party movement and have a little fun during this great time of year.
