Editor’s Note – What this story glances right over is that the Earmark Ban was offered as an amendment to the Food Safety Modernization Act, which passed in the Senate today.
The FSMA basically gives the federal government complete control of our food. Yes, we’ve now nationalized farming. And you think a message was sent on November 2nd?
As for the eight GOP Senators who voted to continue earmarks, do you think it’s a coincident that only one is up for re-election in 2012? And that one is Senator Lugar, who has all but dared the tea party movement to field a candidate against him. If a message was sent on November 2nd, it was stamped ‘Return to Sender’!
For those who thought November solved our problems, that’s little more than wishful thinking. In addition to this betrayal on earmarks, the House GOP leadership just announced plans to keep the more popular provisions of ObamaCare in any Republican alternative.
No one is asking, but my advice to the tea party movement is to start developing plans for the next step once the Republican Party let’s the American people down…it’s no longer a question of if, it’s only a matter of when.

Eight GOP Senators Vote To Keep Earmarks

TheHill.comEight Republican senators on Tuesday voted to preserve earmark spending despite pressure from the Tea Party movement.
Sens. Thad Cochran (Miss.), Susan Collins (Maine), James Inhofe (Okla.), Dick Lugar (Ind.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Richard Shelby (Ala.) voted against an amendment to food-safety legislation that would have enacted a two-year ban on the spending items. Retiring Sen. George Voinovich (Ohio) and defeated Sen. Bob Bennett (Utah) also voted against it.Â
Senate Republicans had already passed a voluntary earmark ban, but Tuesday’s vote shows that the conference is still divided over the issue. The overall Senate proposal failed 39-56.
Even though earmarks represent a small portion of overall discretionary spending, Tea Party activists have pressured lawmakers to outlaw the practice, saying it is a good way to start reining in high spending.Â
Of the senators who voted against it, only Lugar faces reelection in 2012.
