TSA's New Policies Discriminate Against The Wrong People

I was all set to go see my aging parents in North Carolina this week when word came down from the TSA about full body scans and groping pat downs. I had 5 round trip tickets to Atlanta and was looking forward to seeing my parents whom I have not seen in many months.

All of that changed in the last few weeks which left me with some difficult choices. Needless to say, I am driving 10 hours to NC to go see my parents for Thanksgiving.

Common sense and political correctness have once again taken away another privilege of the American people. Rather than use the full body scan and pat downs for people who could be identified as possible suspects, the TSA has decided to make all of us suspects and waste valuable time and resources by making EVERYONE go through the process.

Why are they doing it this way rather than profiling people as they come into the airport or go through the lines? My only guess is to be politically correct. What other reason can explain having people in their 80’s and 90’s going through scanners and full body grabs or young children being groped and prodded?

Rather than offending a few possible suspects, the TSA has decided that offending everyday law abiding citizens makes us all safer.

If you are undergoing radiation treatments, have been a rape victim, or possibly have other mental or medical needs….you have just lost your right to personal dignity if you want to fly in the US. All because of political correctness or ineptitude. I am not sure which it is at this point.

If the odds of dying on a plane are 1 in 10 million(as I have read), then how much safer has this extra layer of security made us? Do the odds now favor 1 in 20 million? Nothing in life is absolute and we will never eliminate the threat from terrorists 100%. That is a fact. The real question I believe is at what cost to our freedom are we willing to sacrifice things in order to feel safer.

I would argue that while all of the intentions of the TSA are good, they are misguided horribly and do not make us that much safer but rather penalize everyday Americans. These new layers of security should be for those people who may be suspects or potential threats once they have gone through traditional screening processes.

I am sure someone in the FBI could devise such a plan and in the process we could save billions of dollars in wasted manpower. As it stands now, we have no common sense left in this country and everyone is always worried about political correctness. We would rather subject everyday Americans to humiliation and terror rather than do the right thing and use common sense methods to identify potential threats.

After calling the TSA last week, I decided that my family would not go through the process as there really were only two options, a full body scan or get groped by a stranger. My family did not like either option so we decided to travel via car instead. I realize it is a choice and flying is not a right to us as Americans.

But in some small way I am bitter that once again the terrorists have changed how we live our lives and conduct our business. I really feel sorry for many of the people who this will directly affect through no fault of their own.

Many people have already been embarrassed and humiliated by the new procedures and I am sure that as Thanksgiving approaches, we will see even more. I predict a very ugly scene across airports this week as people are pushed to their limits and are subjected to unreasonable searches.

For some people it is not a big deal and I just hope they realize many of us have valid reasons and concerns about the whole process.

As for me and my family, we decided to travel through rural Georgia and enjoy the scenery and forgo our 5 round trip tickets. If you are traveling on 441, honk if you see us. How will you recognize us? We will be in a white mini-van that says ‘TSA sucks’. You may also hear a few kids fighting if you drive by slow enough.
