House Republicans unanimously elected Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) to be the Speaker-designate of the House of Representatives today. As expected, members of the House GOP conference voted for the Ohio Republican as their choice to be the 61st Speaker of the House on his 61st birthday.
The entire House technically elects the Speaker on the first day of business for each new Congress. Until that time, however, Boehner will be Speaker-designate.
In a clear sign that the Democrat Party is thoroughly entrenched in the hands of the Progressive Left, Speaker Nancy Pelosi will remain the Democratic leader in the next Congress. Despite the party’s drubbing in the midterm elections!
Members of the caucus voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to make Pelosi minority leader, brushing aside a challenge by Rep. Heath Shuler (N.C.), a Blue Dog Democrat who says Pelosi’s controversial public image and low approval ratings are a liability to Democrats looking ahead to 2012. The tally was 150-43.
In what certainly feels like a defeat for conservatives, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) became the first senator in more than 50 years to win a write-in victory. The Associated Press called the race on Wednesday, almost two whole weeks after voters headed to the polls.
The outcome is a set back for the tea party and can be directly attributed to the GOP ‘establishment’ in DC. It also makes you wonder if voters in Alaska are suffering from brain-freeze.
The full House Ethics Committee will meet Thursday to determine the punishment for New York Democratic Rep. Charles B. Rangel, who was found guilty Tuesday of 11 counts of violating congressional financial reporting and fund-raising rules.
Trust me, the punishment will not fit the crime! In fact, I’m sure a deal was in place from the beginning. In exchange for Pelosi delaying the hearing until after Nov. 2nd, which not only ensures Rangel’s re-election, but also avoids negative attention for other Democrats, Rangel agrees to accept the findings and his punishment, which will be a reprimand, at worse, with little fuss.
This would certainly explain the theatrics witnessed yesterday when good time Charlie non-chalantly walks out on the proceedings. Beginning to think Beck has it all down pat…DC is little more than a puppet show.
