Clown Proofing Free Speech

Obama-Islam-Constitution-BurningBy: Rob Reilly

Connie Hair’s recent column titled “Sharia Law’s Threat To Free Speech” just about stopped me in my tracks, today.

Her article cited example after example of how Sharia law is completely incompatible with the United States Constitution. She contends that the Organization of Islamic Conference, a group of some 57 kings and heads of Islamic states, are orchestrating a coordinated push to spread Sharia law throughout the World. One aspect of this push is to limit free speech, specifically as it pertains to being critical of Mohammad and the laws of Islam.

That may be how it is in other countries, but it cannot be tolerated in the United States. The famous Reagan phrase “If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on Earth” rings absolutely true in this case. We cannot lose our freedom of speech. I think the World will be thrust back 1000 years, if that happens. There’s a very specific reason why it is listed as the 1st Amendment.

I’ve seen the aggressive, violent behavior against “non-believers” who speak their mind and give their opinion. Ever heard of Salman Rushdie? Sure, I remember that big hubbub. Do you? More recently, how about the Gainesville pastor, who “threatened” to burn the Koran? There were death threats from around the World, Obama stuck his nose in the affair, and you’d think all Armageddon was about to break loose.

Hmmmm? Armageddon didn’t happen. What conclusion can you draw from that outcome?

I’m a writer and I’ve never had a death threat. Well, not any to which I paid any attention.

My livelihood is writing and giving my opinion. I don’t claim to be a journalist and certainly will not toe any politically correct line. Today, Conservative and journalist just don’t go together. I put my ideas out there and let the chips fall where they may. People are critical of my work, sometimes. I’m not so thin skinned as to let it bother me. They can have their opinion too. See how that works? In America, the Constitution guarantees me my right (and yours) to have an opinion and exercise free speech.

So, now I’m expected to sit down and shut up because Sharia law is sweeping over humanity? You expect me, a man of hardheaded Irish and German descent, to back off and not engage in discussing the matter?

You have got to be kidding!

If anybody believes that I’m going to do that, they better read my recent column titled “Facing The Irrational Liberal?…Get Your Irish Blather Going”.

I have no intention of giving up my freedom of speech. Or my opinions. I also will not give up my right to keep and bear arms.

By the way, I will not be converting to Islam, either. My religious views are my business. They’re not idiotic authoritarian state business, not some ridiculous foreign law proclamation business, not moronic United Nations resolution business. They are mine and mine alone.

You’re free to talk about your religion, politics, or ideology. That doesn’t mean I have to listen. Do not try to impose your beliefs on me.

I flatly will not bow to Sharia law!

With the Constitution backing me up, it’s impossible to make my point any more clearly.

The way I see it, Sharia law is a primitive, barbaric, and super-aggressive method for keeping people in line. It mocks and undermines women’s rights, allowing them only a fraction of the liberty bestowed on their male masters. It directly opposes capitalism and apparently any kind of wealth creation. It proclaims death in one’s cause to be a virtue and something that will be rewarded in Heaven. This is the 21st century, for crying out loud. I’m a technology guy. I’m not going to revert back to the 7th century. That’s not advancing civilization. It’s going the wrong direction. Talk about not liking change. Last, but not least, Sharia law dictates what you can say and when you can say it.

Boy…how can you argue with that logic? Sounds remarkably similar to all other dictatorial regimes around the world.

I’ve never stayed in line. So, no Sharia law for Rob!

OK, so now what happens?

Will I be ignored by my colleagues in the media. Probably, I’m a Conservative writer, I know the game. Will I be targeted for retaliation by the Obama/Democrat/Liberal/Marxist/Communist political hit machine? I’ve attended lots of Tea Parties and rode the bus to the Glenn Beck Restoring Honor Rally, so I’m surely at the top of a bunch of lists. Will my phones be tapped and my bank accounts drained? Good luck tracking and analyzing the thousands of “secret” messages, that get sent by my kids every month. Oh, yeah, I’m a technology expert, self employed and left my last corporate job, over a year ago. Can I expect my car to explode, the next time I get in and turn the darn key? That would put me in an extremely grumpy mood.

Or, as an American Citizen, minding my own business and peacefully making my own way in life, here in the United States…will I be faced with some Bozo showing up at my door threatening to kill me simply because I have an opinion that is at odds with their beliefs?

If you are such a clown, you might want to watch Clint Eastwood’s famous American western “The Outlaw Josie Wales”, one final time, before you give that last one a try.
