Signs That The Apocalypse Is Upon Us

Talk about overwhelming the system!

There are a lot of things happening in the news this week, some of which will be highlighted in the media and some which will be completely ignored.

Before you proceed, you may want to stop and prepare your favorite beverage, put on some relaxing music and, perhaps, light a candle…

Kagan Confirmed to Supreme Court – The Senate confirmed Elena Kagan to a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court in a vote of 63-37 Thursday.  So, a liberal political activist with little judicial experience who will be unable to separate her political views from decisions on the bench has been appointed to the Supreme Court.  Perhaps, the most unqualified appointee in the history of this nation.

One Judge Voids 7,000,000 Voters – A federal judge, who is gay himself, declared California’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional Wednesday, saying that no legitimate state interest justified treating gay and lesbian couples differently from others and that “moral disapproval” was not enough to save the voter-passed Proposition 8.  The ruling was the first in the country to strike down a marriage ban on federal constitutional grounds.

New Claims for Jobless Benefits Rise to 479K – Initial requests for jobless benefits rose last week to their highest level since April, a sign that hiring remains weak and some companies are still cutting workers.  The Labor Department said Thursday that new claims for unemployment insurance rose by 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 479,000. Claims have risen twice in the past three weeks.

Food Stamp Use Hit Record 40.8m in May – The number of Americans who are receiving food stamps rose to a record 40.8 million in May as the jobless rate hovered near a 27-year high.  Participation has set records for 18 straight months.  An average of 40.5 million people, more than an eighth of the population (1 out of 8!!!) will get food stamps each month in the year that began Oct. 1, according to White House estimates.

Let Them Eat Cake – While many of us are struggling, the First Lady Michelle Obama is spending the next few days in a five-star hotel on the chic Costa del Sol in southern Spain with 40 of her “closest friends.” According to CNN, the group is expected to occupy 60 to 70 rooms, more than a third of the lodgings at the 160-room resort. Estimated room rate per night? Up to a staggering $2,500.  Just this month, Obama told ABC the First Couple is “not that far removed from what most Americans are going through.”

In DC, No Such Thing as Too Poor For Medical Pot – There’s no such thing as too poor to buy pot if you live in D.C., at least if the marijuana is for a medical condition. That’s part of the conclusion of a new law enacted in the nation’s capital earlier this year. The medical marijuana law allows people to legally obtain the drug for medical reasons. But the law also includes a provision requiring the drug to be provided at a discount to poor residents.

Buying an Election at Taxpayer Expense? – Rumors are running wild that Obama is about to order Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to forgive a portion of the mortgage debt of millions of Americans who owe more than what their homes are worth. An estimated 15 million U.S. mortgages – one in five – are underwater with negative equity of some $800 billion. The move, if it happens, would be a stunning political and economic bombshell less than 100 days before a midterm election in which Democrats are currently expected to suffer massive, if not historic losses.
