The Bully Pulpit Is Empty
By Ron McCoy
West Orlando Tea Party
Having just attended my first ‘political event’, I was looking forward to seeing my representative from the 8th district of Florida, Alan Grayson.
It was disappointing to find that he was not there. After all, it was in the heart of his district that this political gathering took place. There were lots of people there running for office, from local judges to congressional candidates running against him.  There were people running for the Mayor of Orange County and I was pleased to see all of them there.
Regardless of party affiliation, I saw many candidates and got to speak to many of them. I would like to think that I as a tea party person, I had an influence on Alan Grayson not showing up. But I am not that big and I got my ticket to the event at the eleventh hour. So I went with my wife and did the Hob Knob thing and took it all in.
After meeting some people, I went by Mr. Grayson’s table and I saw two young people there. I did not go up to the table as I am not a supporter, but I was anxious to see if he would show up as he represents our district. In fact, he was very eager to send a certificate of achievement to my daughter who is 11 years old when she started a project at her elementary school ‘ Helping Hands For Haiti ‘. She started the project out of the love for people and raised $800 for the American Red Cross to donate to the people of Haiti.
I would be lying if I told you I went there with my daughter to see ‘her’ Congressman. I went to hear and meet people and experience the political process and see what a Hob Knob is all about. It was a great experience and the one thing I could not understand was why my Congressman was not there.
Some candidates had their volunteers there to make a presence and let voters know where they stood, even if they could not make it. I get that. What amazed me was that Alan Grayson’s table was BLANK. No one even stopped by…maybe a few but then the two volunteers suddenly left in the middle of the event. This is his district and he can’t even keep his own volunteers to work his table? When they introduced the District 8 Congressional candidates, he and his supporters were gone. What does that say for voters and the people he represents?
Was Alan Grayson too busy or too embarrassed, or does he see the writing on the wall?
I think he is a coward, afraid to face the public and his campaign people were embarrassed by being so roundly ignored and that is why they left. Maybe the kitchen has gotten too hot for him as he has made his bed and now realizes his days are numbered. Or maybe he will claim that it was a ‘hostile environment’ and unfair.
I am sure he will have an excuse as most liberals like him do. You would think that an elected official that spends $73,000 of taxpayer money on a DVD, would at least show up to meet voters.
The Florida TEA party and their candidates did not show up either. Go figure. So I say to Mr. Grayson, the tea party movement can plan your retirement party with or without you. It’s your call.
