“We Don’t Commiserate With Bigots”

Last Tuesday the NAACP adopted a resolution condemning “racist elements” in the Tea Party movement, referencing an incident in March when Tea Party protesters allegedly hurled racial epithets at black lawmakers on Capitol Hill ahead of a health care vote. A puzzling move, especially since there has been absolutely no evidence to support the claim and the lawmakers involved backed away from their initial statements.
As for motive, most on the right see this as nothing more than a political ploy by the Democrat Party, which stands to lose substantially in November, with the NAACP being a willing accomplice, to play on the emotions of minorities to motivate them to get out to the polls on election day.
Looking past motive, we have to ask what impact did the NAACP’s action have? As expected, the complicit media ran with the story all week, reinforcing the negative branding of the tea party movement, so, was the strategy effective?
The West Orlando Tea Party is a newly formed group that is about 4 months old. The group has yet to have it first official public event, however, this is about to change. For this inaugural event, the group has decided to hit the ground at a full sprint, planning a District 8 Candidate Town Hall at the Foundation Academy on August 12, with WFLA sponsoring the event and Bud Hedinger moderating.

As part of the normal pre-event activities, WFLA and the WOTP issued a press release yesterday announcing the Town Hall. The reason behind such a release is to inform local media of the upcoming activity and share basic details to encourage coverage.
Surprisingly, a response was received today from West Orlando News On-line. On their web site they tout themselves as the “2nd largest minority owned website in the state of Florida” and state their purpose as “providing our readers an urban view of the region, the state and the nation.”
The response received from West Orlando News On-line? “We don’t commiserate with bigots.”
That’s it. No questions, no inquiries and no indication as to why such a response is warranted. Nor a name to stand behind the statement. There have been no previous interactions with West Orlando News Online that may have given them justification for responding in such a manner. So, what would compel this organization to react this way?
Which takes us back to the earlier question, was the NAACP’s strategy effective?
If you were to look honestly upon the tea party movement, you would have to acknowledge that it is possibly the most peaceful ativist movement in our nation’s history. If you spent any time at a tea party rally, you’d also realize it is the most inclusive. There is only one requirement, a desire for a fiscally responsible, limited government that respects the constitution.
Regardless of which side of the isle you find yourself on, it’s safe to assume that most citizens in America agree that these are perilous times in our country. We have politicians on both sides whose actions are first and foremost centered around personal gain and consolidation of power, with the will of the people having little impact on their decisions.
It is indeed unfortunate that we still have citizens who fall prey to these politicians and their age old politics of division. These politicians fully understand that as long as the people are drawing lines amongst themselves and facing off against one another that the true power and impact that could be realized continues to be diminished. And the politicians continue to flourish.
We don’t commiserate with bigots? Perhaps, with a little introspection, you will find the bigots you seek, and, in the process, you’ll come to see that your actions are only furthering the interests of one class in America – the ruling class in Washington, D.C.
