O’Donoghue Presses Grayson to Come Clean on Ties to Florida Tea Party Political Party

(Winter Park, Fl)–  Citing Alan Grayson’s repeated run-ins with the Federal Election Commission, conservative small businessman Bruce O’Donoghue today reiterated his call for Alan Grayson to come clean with voters about his ties to the Florida Tea Party Political Party.

“Alan Grayson’s repeated offenses with the FEC reveal a stunning pattern of arrogance and contempt toward voters and toward the law” said O’Donoghue.  “Grayson’s long rap sheet with the FEC demonstrates his willingness to do and say whatever it takes to hold onto political power, including manipulating FEC laws to suit his political needs.  That is why it is imperative that Grayson comes clean  about his financial ties to the Florida Tea Party Political Party.  It’s disturbing that Grayson continues to insult voters by denying his ties to the FTP, even though the treasurer for the ‘Friends to Re-elect Alan Grayson’ is an FTP candidate and Grayson’s pollster, a ‘quasi-paralegal assistant’ and house cleaner, is an FTP candidate.  Grayson’s ability to misrepresent the truth in the face of cold hard facts is deeply troubling.”

Over the course of his short congressional career, Grayson has had several public tangles with the FEC.  In April of this year, the FEC ruled that the Committee to Elect Alan Grayson (CTEAG) grossly misstated its cash flow in 2007 and 2008.  In March of 2010, a complaint was filed against Grayson for soliciting corporate contributions for another Democrat running for statewide office.  The case remains pending.  And earlier this month, the FEC dismissed a frivolous case filed by Grayson against Angie Langley, the founder of mycongressmanisnuts.com.

The recent revelations surrounding Grayson’s ties to the Florida Tea Party Political raise even more questions about the veracity of his FEC reports.  Here are the details known thus far:

Alan Grayson’s campaign paid a company formed by Victoria Torres, a Florida Tea Party candidate for the state House of Representatives nearly $28,000.

  • Torres’ business partner in this company is Doug Guetzloe, a co-founder of the Florida Tea Party, who refuses to disclose how much money he has received from Grayson’s campaign.
  • Guetzloe’s radio program — now cancelled because of his involvement in this scandal — has been sponsored with advertising dollars from Alan Grayson’s campaign.
  • Florida Tea Party candidate Raul Rodriquez listed himself as treasurer of ‘The Friends to Re-Elect Alan Grayson.’

O’Donoghue, who is endorsed by lifelong friends, former U.S. Senator Mel Martinez and former Florida Lieutenant Governor Toni Jennings, was recently named an “On the Radar” candidate by the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “Young Guns” program after raising over $350,000 in the first quarter of 2010.  O’Donoghue raised more funds than all the other GOP candidates combined in the 8th District.

Florida’s 8th Congressional District is considered a “Tilt Republican” District by the Rothenberg Political Report.
