Lies, damn lies and statistics… Data can be manipulated to say just about anything you want it to say. In this case, it’s all in the wording of the question. Of course, the writer is quick to ‘inform’ you that voter anger over the passing of health care reform is subsiding. Not sure if this is wishful thinking on his part, or him misinterpreting the results.
As for the phrasing of the question, as the article states, back in March, the question asked whether voters “had a favorable or unfavorable view” of Obama. Only 37 percent had a favorable view. The current poll asks to rate Obama’s “job performance”. As you can see, two very different questions.
So, are voters beginning to forgive Obama for shoving nationalized healthcare down their throats? Not sure, but, we’ll know the answer in November, and my thought is that it will be a resounding no! And, yes, that is wishful thinking. – Tom Tillison

Polls finds opposition to immigration reform

Sun SentinelA slight majority of Florida voters are unimpressed with Barack Obama’s performance 17 months into his presidency, according to Mason-Dixon poll results released Monday.
Forty-seven percent in the statewide poll rated Obama’s job performance as excellent or good, while 53 percent called it fair or poor. The difference, however, is within the poll’s margin of error.
The poll also found resistance to Obama’s proposal to give unauthorized immigrants a path to citizenship. The president has urged Congress to begin the debate this year, though final action is not expected until next year.
In the Florida poll, 45 percent of voters said they are opposed and 39 percent are in favor of legislation that allows “all of those who are living here without legal status to be given the opportunity to stay and apply for citizenship.”
“Anybody who is in this country should be here legally and should have to pay their own way,” said Chris Young, 54, a Republican in Oviedo who was polled. “I really don’t want the rest of us to end up like California, which is bankrupt because of all the illegal people in that state being paid and not contributing their fair share.”
The poll, conducted May 3-5, indicates that some of the anger directed at Obama after he signed a controversial health care law has subsided.
A Mason-Dixon poll in March immediately after the signing asked whether voters had a favorable or unfavorable view of the president. Only 37 percent had a favorable view at that point — a plunge from 50 percent when he was elected in November 2008.
The latest poll asked voters to rate the president’s job performance, a different way of evaluating him.
Obama remains relatively popular in South Florida, where 61 percent called his performance good or excellent. In Central Florida, only 42 percent called it good or excellent.
The president continues to get low marks from senior citizens, many of them wary or strongly opposed to the health care overhaul.
Only 40 percent of those 65 or older gave Obama a good or excellent job-approval rating. By contrast, 57 percent of voters age 18 to 34 rated it good or excellent.
The poll reflected a gender gap: 52 percent of women rated Obama’s performance good or excellent. Only 42 percent of men agreed.
The poll surveyed 625 voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
