Eating Our Own – A Tea Party Story

Tom Tillison

One can only hope that November 2010 gets here real quick!  As one who has been a part of the Tea Party movement from the very beginning, it has been awe-inspiring to watch America’s sons and daughters come together to stand as one for this great nation.  The immortal words of Samuel Adams quickly come to mind;

“If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.”

Placing common sense values and traditional principles above all else, respecting no partisan bounds, and exhibiting a sense of conviction that touched all who came in contact with the movement, it seemed that nothing could stop the progress of this cause.

That was then…

Nine months later, it seems that there are more divisions within the Tea Party movement than there are alliances.  Much too much disagreement on tactics, far too many individual groups that continue to grow daily, too many wanting to lead, too few willing to follow.  One has to think that this lack of cohesion will affect the ability of this movement to achieve the critical goals that America calls for.   An important first step in solving a problem is identifying the root cause of the problem.  So what’s driving this division?  Is it petty jealousy?  Envy of the success of some over others?  Is it the very conviction that provides the strength behind the movement that divides it?  These questions beg answers!

More importantly, how can this movement stay on point in the critical year ahead?  It is clear to all involved that the consequences of our failure are too great a burden for America to bear.  Standing on principle alone, without sound strategy, may allow some to sleep a little easier at night, yet, does that feeling perpetuate when you awaken under the bonds of servitude?

We wisely refer to our founding fathers for their words of wisdom within this movement, however, do we miss the one over-riding factor that allowed them to accomplish such a great feat?  The ability to put the greater good before any personal gain…understanding that the cause is far more important than any one individual…realizing that failure means the end of a way of life!  One is hopeful that these questions provide reason for Tea Party leaders to pause and reflect, then proceed, as in the beginning, as a unified force in this historic march to restore liberty in America!
